Very rarely the opening introduction of a celebrated musician turns out to be as captivating as the recital itself; but since Pandit Vijay Kichlu, the director of Sangeet Ashram, is a practicing musician, educator, organizer and moreover a wonderful orator himself, it is a norm with this organization.

Vijay Kichlu has an illustrious record of locating and presenting relatively unknown singers who floor you the moment they hit the first note. This is what he did at A Bandish Bhaithak presented by his Sangeet Ashram at the G.D. Birla Sabhagar on April 17. The singer in question was the elderly Ustad Amir Mohammed Khan of Jaipur.

Presented by Padatik Dance Centre and Sangeet Ashram, the recital at G.D. Birla Sabhagar on September 28 brought together an array of traditional Bharatnatyam numbers. The most enjoyable part of the entire programme was the live accompaniment, so rare these days. Divided into two parts, the programme started with slokam pranamya shirsha devam Gouri putra Vinayakam from Narada Sukta, which describes the birth of Ganesha.
